This part of the larger project has one overarching goal: to catalyze thinking about key elements of the feature essay. So, please approach it in that spirit. This is not about what the instructor wants, so you won’t be getting a “yes” or “no” response from me. Rather, my aim is to help you craft the central question and then support your pursuit of a rich, insightful answer. And there will be plenty of chances to adapt this question as the project continues.
NOTE: Remember that the Feature Essay is geared toward analysis, not reporting: that means your question should lead beyond information delivery and into interpretation (moving from something like “what are the impacts of climate change on endangered species?” to something like “how do corporations or governments place responsibility for the impacts of climate change on consumers/citizens?”).
The format of this pitch might be similar to those you might send to a magazine editor. (If you’re interested in what those look like, I highly recommend you check out the Pitch Database, an archive of pitches by professional writers in a range of genres.) Your pitch will follow the same core questions we’ve used to analyze other essays. Specifically, please answer the following questions:
What is the central question you aim to pursue for this feature article? Or if you are considering more than one, what questions are you considering?
Why this question? That is, how did you come to focus your curiosity on this question?
Does this question lead to analysis, rather than mere reporting? In other words, is there more than one way that someone could answer this question, or multiple opinions/interpretations on how to answer it?
What questions do you think you’ll have to ask and answer in order to make progress toward your central question?
Why do you think this question matters? Put differently, why should others care about this?
What do you believe you have to research to develop the essay? Have you completed any preliminary research so far
Do you have any initial thoughts on how the piece might be structured, or what genre it might fall under?
After completing the pitch answer the following questions
First let’s return to your Pitch. What is the central question or set of questions you hope to pursue in the Feature Essay? You can copy that straight from your Pitch, or tweak it if you have any changes to make based on the note below.
NOTE: Remember that the Feature Essay is geared toward analysis, not reporting: that means your question should lead beyond information delivery and into interpretation (moving from something like “what are the impacts of climate change on endangered species?” to something like “how do corporations or governments place responsibility for the impacts of climate change on consumers/citizens?”).Who do you see reading your Feature Essay? What audience(s) will it target? Please identify a couple of different publications, complete with hyperlinks, that you think might include an article of the sort you’re crafting, as this can tell us a lot about your target audience. NOTE: don’t say “this article is for everyone,” or “everyone who cares about X would be interested in this.” As we learned early on, you can’t really write “in general.” You need to have a keen sense of who would be interested in reading about your subject, so that you can gear your writing toward their values or expectations.
What voices or perspectives do you think you’ll need to incorporate to get a well-rounded view of the question you’re asking? In other words, who might have reason to view your question differently than you do? Where would you go to find those perspectives, and how would you incorporate them into your own argument? In addition to answering those questions, list at least two resources you might turn to to represent those perspectives.
Return to your answers about research in the pitch. Building from the directions you know you want to take to create a well-researched Feature Essay, please list: 3-4 specific subtopics or related questions you need to understand better as you pursue your own question
2-3 search terms or journals that might lead to promising results
The name of at least one article you plan to read soon to help you understand your question more deeply.
After reviewing the Feature Essay prompt to get a sense for the assignment sequence and due dates, create a drafting plan complete with a timeline. Your timeline should address the following: Which of the labor-based grading options do you plan to complete to work towards the maximum score? Take a look at the Timeline above to review the five opportunities you have to work towards the maximum score. List the ones you plan to complete, along with due dates. Backtracking from the Feature Essay – Final Version & Reflection due date, list at least 3 project benchmarks, in addition to the optional project components you listed above, along with a date. You might list something like “find at least three new sources,” “take notes on article X,” “draft at least 1000 words,” “compose two paragraphs on subtopic Y,” or whatever procedural steps make the project feel approachable to you. Hopefully you will treat this as a living document that can evolve along with your project and goals!
